A Fish Out of Water

Posted by lori . 3 Comments

With the kids out of school, all my books in June are some of my favorite children’s books.

This is a cautionary tale.  Do as you’re told and follow instructions or THIS may happen to you!  When I was little, my mom signed me up for the Dr. Seuss Book Club.  Every month, a new book came in the mail.  What a lovely gift.  It introduced me to so many wonderful books, and this was one of my favorites.  The little boy in the story purchases a fish.  The pet store owner tells him exactly what he must do and how much to feed the fish.  Of course, the little boy doesn’t listen and the fish, Otto, grows and grows and grows.  What will happen?  You’ll have to read the story to find out if it all turns out well.

I didn’t think there were any Dr. Seuss books left that I hadn’t read! This is one that I haven’t heard of. I may have to look around and see if I can find it!

  • i’m a bit puzzled, like houndstooth. i have a lot of dr suess. this one isn’t familiar. same illustrator but the author is someone else? so the dr seuss book club has other authors in it? hmmm. feeling duh.

The mail order book club was called Dr. Seuss Beginner Books and it still exists! Of course, when I received the books they were “hot off the press,” and now they’re “classics.” A Fish Out of Water was written by Dr. Seuss’ first wife and P. D. Eastman illustrated it. P. D. Eastman also wrote Go, Dog. Go! and Are You My Mother? Here’s a link to the Beginner Books on Wikipedia. Very interesting.
