Books I Read – Jul-Sep 2013
.
Here’s what I’ve been reading the last three months…
A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash
This novel is set in a small North Carolina town and revolves around family, secrets, love, evil and tragedy. The characters are strongly drawn, but you always have the sense that you don’t know everything that going on. This novel is narrated by three voices; Jess, a young boy; Adelaide, the town midwife; and Clem, the town sheriff. At the center of the present day story is a evil charismatic pastor. This novel is heartbreaking, memorable and a great pick if you like southern novels with a dark, tragic bend. This would make a great book club pick because there’s a lot to talk about.
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
This is a horror story…Judas Coyne is a semi-retired, heavy metal rocker who collects macabre objects. When a suit, said to be haunted by the owner’s ghost is offered in an online auction, he purchases it. I’ll leave it at that. Great characters, a compelling story. If you love horror, give this one a try. Fun fact…Joe Hill is the son of Stephen & Tabitha King.
How apt that first title is for me! I wonder how much undercurrent there is here, that is invisible to the transient eye. Probably a lot.
So good!!! I use to read books!!!! Now — it is hard to read your and the others blogs!!
We will have to remember that first book title, it sounds really good and my mom likes to read alot!

they sound good. Just don’t read much these days.
Oooo we love a good horror just the thing for Shocktober. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
Best wishes Molly
Thanks for the recommendations. Always looking for the next good read.
Both books sound like my kind of stories. I have made note of both. Especially interested in the one set in NC.
Hugs Cecilia
You should read that one because the author is from North Carolina too.
Second book sounds to scary for HER. SHE’s a chicken.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
I’ve heard lots of good things about Heart Shaped Box, but the other one is new to me. I always love hearing about what other people are reading!
Thanks for sharing. I still read books for a half hour or so every day so I’m always looking for suggestions!
How do you get time to read??? You’ve got a full time job, blog every day and have 3 wonderful dogs (and a husband!). Plus the painting and all the other creative things you do. I don’t think you sleep!
That’s what I always think when I read other people’s blogs, including yours (ha).
The horror one looks good to me, I have a weakness for horror stories. I agree with greyhounds cna sit though, you sure get a lot done
urban hounds
I don’t like scary books, but let me know if you read the new Stephen King book, Doctor Sleep. It is about RVers. LOL I think they are killers. He was on The View and I was laughing as he was talking about RVers, but I am not sure I would like the book.
I will get to it eventually. I love Stephen King. Currently, I’m listening to his book Joyland.
I really fancy reading the Heart Shaped Box one, thanks for sharing!

I’m always looking for new authors but I have to say neither of these appeals to me. I don’t read horror – I went through a horror stage but never went back to it – and I’ve read too many tragic novels in recent years. I’m into lighter stuff right now, plus the Italian, of course!
“Life” (work, etc.) is seriously interfering with my reading! But I must say I loved Heart-Shaped Box. My SIL said that Hill’s latest, Nos4a2 is awesome…meanwhile, the Stephen King library was supposed to have already sent me “Doctor Sleep” and they’ve screwed up and I don’t have it yet!
You’ll have to let me know what you think of Doctor Sleep. I plan to read all of Joe Hill’s books.
The Wiley Cash books looks good.
THANKS for sharing.
