Princess Diana

Posted by lori . 11 Comments

Friday morning, I was up at 4 am with two of my girlfriends, watching the Royal Wedding.  We donned tiaras and watched until we had to leave to catch our flight back to Indiana.  Watching the Royal Wedding had me reminiscing about my one and only “brush with royalty.”

In 1985, I was stationed in Hawaii and heard on the news that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were going to stop off in Hawaii between their visit to Australia and their visit to the US.  Their plane was going to land at Hickam Air Force Base.  I was thrilled.  My initial plan was that I just wanted to say I was on the base the same time Princess Diana was.  I grabbed my camera, on the off chance that I could get a picture of the plane.

I got to Hickam Air Force Base and was able to find the airfield the plane was coming in on.  When I got there, I saw some people walking towards something; so I walked with them.  To my surprise, there was an area cordoned off for people to stand.  I’m thinking, “This is getting interesting.  I may actually get to see the plane and the royal couple in the distance.”

The plane came in, and I fired off quite a few shots hoping I’d get a good picture (this was the day of the film camera).  Then, a limousine pulled up.  WHAT?  Maybe I’d be able to get an even closer shot.  The Prince and Princess headed towards the limo and then decided to come over and meet the crowd.  WHAT?  And the rest is history.  I got to shake Princess Diana’s hand AND document the whole thing with the worst pictures ever taken.  Here is the story…

Wasn’t that a fabulous wedding? I loved Kate’s dress and how in love they seemed. Every girl’s fairy tale!

Puddles – What a small world. I was stationed at Schofield Barracks but service members could get on any military base. It is one of my favorite memories, and I brag about it whenever I can.

P.S. You have a young mommy!

I remember being a little girl and begging to see the wedding. My mom got us up early that day so that we could see it on TV and I just remember thinking what a beautiful fairy tale it was. We saw the Royal Wedding from our hotel room on our way to Pennsylvania this weekend. Actually, I think Bunny watched the most of it while we were getting ready. It really was a beautiful ceremony, and I am wishing them all the best in their married life. It’s so cool that you got to meet Princess Diana! I’d be telling that story every chance I got, too. The main good one I have is about getting a private tour of the White House when I was in college. Not nearly as cool as meeting a real princess!

That’s a wonderful memory and experience! I’ve been to Washington, D.C. twice but never to the White House. Now that is an area of the country with a million things to see and do.

Uh, okay, my mom just passed out! She told me once that she was a humongous Princess Di fan and that she just cried and cried when she had to go to the Bridge. How very exciting for you that you gots to see her so up close and pawsonal!

    Wiggles & Wags,

    PeeS. I likes your tiaras.

I’m just like your mommy! I love(d) Princess Diana. She was the princess of my generation. Back in February, my girlfriend and I went to see Diana: a Celebration. If your mommy ever gets a chance to go see it, she will LOVE it. The collection is at Althorp during the summer and then travels the rest of the year. It’s in Kansas City, MO right now, until June 12, 2011. Here’s my post about it if your mommy hasn’t heard about it. It was fun to share this special memory with everyone. Here’s to the new Princess Katherine!
