SHED – Part 1
.
You may have been expecting to see Snowy Lady Quilt – Part 2, but I’m in a slump…stuck. There are extra stresses in our family right now…employment, illness with family & friends, aging parents, a daughter who has graduated and is embarking on her life after college. Currently, nothing especially horrible, just changing and uncertain. These things tend to come in clumps, and taken together, they’ve thrown me.
This past week I was in my basement, disgusted with myself and thinking “what’s wrong with me,” when I stumbled upon this book, SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Julie Morgenstern. I went through this book very thoughtfully several years ago after my daughter left for college, and I was in the throes of empty nest syndrome.
The idea behind the book is that “SHED is a transformative process for letting go of things that represent the past so you can grow and move forward. The four steps of SHED (Separate the Treasures, Heave the Trash, Embrace Your Identity, Drive Yourself Forward) provide a framework for proactively managing change, transition, and the feeling of being stuck and unsure. By releasing the defunct, extraneous, and burdensome objects and obligations that are weighing you down, you create the space to discover what’s next and gather the energy and courage to move forward.”
After I went through this book the first time, I was able to start finding a new life after my “mommy” days. That’s when I started my blog and began to embrace the idea that I was an artistic person. That’s not what I intended; it’s what happened when I SHED my old roles and opened myself up for new ones.
Let’s see if it works a second time.
Well I hope you get unstuck with your quilt and I am so glad the book brought you to blogging because I love your blog

I’ve been “shedding” my stuff as well. The “things” that used to be important to me, aren’t anymore.
Isn’t it always the way that everything seems to come together!
Sometimes your mind seems completely numb, doesn’t it.
Hope your book helps.

Change can be hard, but if you embrace it with both hands, it can be wonderful. I hope everything that’s going on gets sorted and you can start the next phase of your life.
You know that I shedded almost everything I owned when we become full-timers. It is a very freeing feeling to me. I hope you find some “freedom”.
Sorry to hear about your extra stresses. I am sure that the shedding thing will help. It can be very freeing. I am currently in a slump after starting to shed and then coming to a stop. Or more a pause. It’s on hold around here for a time due to additional people arriving in our family. I will return to the shedding. What I really could do with now is shedding of some physical weight and some old old habits of behaviour that seem to be showing up again. I look forward to reading more shed posts Lori. x
Lori bless your heart I hear you…..over the last 8 weeks life as I knew it came to a screeching halt and you are right things happen in bunches.
My Daddy’s horrible accident and death, problems with my Mom’s caregivers and ultimately moving her to assisted living, which after weeks of anguish, has turned out ok.
Lots of hugs
Cecilia
Well, we can’t wait to see where this brings you. I thought at first you all built a new shed! Good luck to you!
We’ve felt a little stuck lately as well. It’s been three weeks since anything went up on the blog. Can’t point to anything specific. Maybe we’ll get that book and give it a try.
That book sounds like a great thing. Getting rid of stuff can be so liberating!
I’m so sorry life is throwing you curve balls Lori, we too are having a few family problems with parents becoming poorly and it is hard to remain upbeat. Hope life calms itself down around you real soon.
I can’t remember how I first came to visit your blog butI do remember thinking about the name of your blog and wondering if it was to with empty nest and now I know.
Sending love and hugs Sue and the ever increasing taylor pack.
pps Hope other Lori can help you out with the corn treatment xxx
