School Memories – Part 4

.

This is where the rubber meets the road…it’s time for me to stop fussing about and start putting my school memories album together. This is an intimidating project for me, but I’m just going to get started. One thing I know…you only get better by doing.

I’m going to spend the last few Thursdays of 2012, putting this album together with the goal of having it finished by the end of the year. Wish me luck.

Try This – 3-D Felt Ornament

.

December’s “Try This” posts will be all about Christmas…fun little crafts I’d like to try. I saw this ornament in the Better Homes & Gardens Holiday Crafts 2011 magazine.

Cut a piece of felt 1-1/2″ x 4-1/2″.

Roll the piece of felt into a cylinder and glue.

Trace the ornament shape on the felt and cut out 12 pieces.

Why I only photographed 9 pieces is a mystery. Glue the straight edge of the pieces to the cylinder. Thread yarn through a bead and glue it on top of the ornament.

To see the ornament in two colors of felt, check out Felt 3-D Christmas Ornament on the Better Homes & Gardens website.

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.

Love This – Tidy Cat Pure Nature

.

I decided to try this litter because of a coupon and now it’s my new favorite. Tidy Cat Pure Nature is made of cedar, corn and pine, clumps nicely and is super light. Twinkie is not a real litter box digger, so I didn’t notice any more tracking outside of the litter box than with clay litter. If you’re looking for a natural litter, give this one a try.

In My Studio – December 3

.

Here’s what’s been happening in my studio…

My focus the entire month of November was the Art Every Day Month challenge.

I committed to starting a “girl” painting every day of the month.

This was a challenge, but I’m glad I did it because it forced me to paint without getting wrapped up in a lot of detail.

It’s interesting to see what pops up when I just start painting.

I have a lot of work ahead of me to finish up the paintings, but it sure feels good to have so many of my girls started.

Since I was so busy with my girl paintings, I kept November’s “Try This” posts simple.  I love making flowers, so I did a different flower every week.  The final flower for November was made using Clover’s Flower Frill Templates. I was impressed with this flower. It has a substantial look and feel.

Santa Hats

.

To capture the spirit of the season, the pups have new Santa hats. These adorable creations are from Acme Couture. Freedom agreed to model.

Freedom:  Do I have to model our new hats? Why can’t Casper or Nikki model?

Me:  Casper & Nikki are sleeping, and you look  particularly adorable.

Freedom:  I don’t believe you. I think you just…WHAT IS THAT WHITE THING!?!

Me:  Now hold still. How about a profile shot?

Me:  That’s nice. Now let me move over and get a different angle.

Freedom:  Are we almost done?

Me:  Almost. Quit looking out of the corner of your eye.

Freedom:  I can’t help it, I’m a greyhound; I have a 270° field of vision…WHAT’S THAT WHITE THING!?!

Me:  Okay, I think everyone has a good idea what the new Santa hats look like.

School Memories – Even More Stories

.

All this month on Thursdays, I’m writing down some of my school memories.  I’m doing this because I’m putting together my first little photo album.  Back on November 1st, I wrote down some journaling prompts, and I’m using them to “free write” some of my memories.  My hope is that this will help me pick the stories I want to include in my album.

What did I wear (school fashion)?

Girls had to wear dresses when I first started school. This was in public school. When we were first allowed to wear pants, we had to go to a “fashion show” to see what was acceptable. If we wore pants, we had to wear a pantsuit, which was pants with a matching jacket or vest. This brings me to one of my favorite memories…When I was in 4th grade, I received a box of fabric for Christmas. To say I was disappointed (and confused) is an understatement. The “present” was that my mom was going to make me some mix-and-match outfits for school. She made me 2 vests, 2 skirts and 2 pairs of pants. This was my first foray into the world of mix-and-match, and as a future fashionista, I was delighted with all the possibilities. One of my ensembles was to wear a shirt, a vest, a pair of pants and a skirt…all at once.  The first time my sister saw me in this particular outfit, she said to me, “Did you forget to stop dressing?” Ouch! Needless to say, I learned the value of editing. The picture above is me wearing a shirt, vest and skirt. I don’t know if this was after my sister gave me her critique, or if it was just a day I hadn’t selected the shirt/vest/skirt/pants combo.

Any interesting school field trips?

The only field trip I recall was our 6th grade field trip to the museums in Chicago.

What were my favorite/least favorite school projects?

My favorite school project was my first full-length story. It was a mystery, and I wrote it in the 4th grade. The last name of my main characters was Snickasneer. Whenever I read students’ writing and it includes overly unusual names, it takes me back to this story of mine. I struggled with Geometry.  We had to keep a notebook for that class,fd and I hated it.

What are some interesting school stories I would like to remember?

A fun story…My girlfriend was a little daredevil. One day she had the idea that we could climb out of our second floor classroom window, lower ourselves to the ledge between the first and second floor, turn around and them leap down to the ground. She demonstrated this and then it was my turn. I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so she ran all the way back into the building and did it again to show me how easy it was. At this point, I had to do it or be labeled a “chicken,” so I crawled out the window and as soon as my feet touched the ledge, our teacher rounded the corner and  hollered at me “to get down from there.” That type of luck has followed me throughout life. I had to just give in a behave myself.

How did school shape me into the person I am today?

Art Every Day Month – Day 29

I’m participating in Art Every Day Month.  Every day during the month of November I’m going to start a painting. They will vary in their completeness…from “just started” to done.”

Try This – Frill Flower

.

November’s “Try This” posts all feature flowers. This week’s flower was made using Clover’s Flower Frill Templates.

The kit comes with 2 templates  of each size and an instruction sheet.

I started by cutting 15 fabric squares and threading a needle.

Following the instructions, fold the fabric.

Cut the fabric following the template.

Insert the needle and pull the thread through.

Continue constructing petals and stringing them on the thread.

When you have all the petals finished, gather them together.

Remove the needle and tie the two ends of the thread together.

Pull the petals open to create a nice, full flower.

Art Every Day Month – Day 28

I’m participating in Art Every Day Month.  Every day during the month of November I’m going to start a painting. Most won’t be finished, but I’ll get something started…a lot or a little.

Love this – Chewy.com & Blue Buffalo

.

I was contacted by Chewy.com and ask if I would like to do a review of Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats Chicken Jerky. So, I asked the kids, “Hey kids, would we like to do a review of chicken jerky treats?”

Freedom:  YES!

Casper:  YES!

Nikki:  YES!

Me:  Don’t you want to know what’s in the treats, where the meat is  from and where it’s manufactured.

Freedom:  No, we don’t care!

Casper:  We want chicken treats!

Nikki:  TREATS!

Me:  Fortunately for you, I checked and Blue Buffalo Chicken Jerky treats are made from US chicken and manufactured in the US.

Freedom:  Who cares!?!

Casper:  Email them back quickly and say, “yes” before they change their minds.

Nikki:  We want treats!

Blue Buffalo believes in not only treating our pets like family, but feeding them like family too. Blue products are as well known for what they DON’T contain as what they DO!

All of their great tasting, natural and holistic dog and cat food recipes start with real meat as the first ingredient. Their food contains plenty of wholesome whole grains, garden veggies and fruit.

Unlike many other products on the market, you can literally see the vitamins in each serving. There’s also no artificial preservative, corn, wheat or soy. Blue treats are no exception.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats Chicken Jerky is an all natural and grain-free treat. The ingredient list is as simple as chicken, dried cane molasses and salt. This yummy treat has a minimum of 50% crude protein.

Chewy.com is happy to offer the full line of Blue Buffalo including dog food, dog treats, cat food and cat treats delivered directly to your doorstep.

The treats arrived (quickly) and here’s the conclusion…

Freedom:  YUM!

Casper:  YUM! YUM!

Nikki:  YUM! YUM! YUM!

and maybe the best review…

Husband:  These look good, can I have one?
