In My Studio – February 4

.

Here’s what’s been happening in my studio…

Art Journal Two Loves

I continue to labor away at the art journal project I started last year.

Art Journal Little Reminders

I’m using prompts from Art Journal All Year E-Course from Red Velvet Shop. The course offers an art challenge and a journal challenge for 52 weeks. I finished up to Week 46.

Art Journal Kindness

I’m going to try like crazy to finish this up by next Monday.

January Card 6

Here is a picture of another project I made at one of my January card clubs. I didn’t post the picture earlier because I used it for a bookmark competition we had in my Random Acts of Kindness group.

This Week’s Inspiration

In 2013, I’m doing Inspiration Mondays and Results Thursdays. Every Monday, I’ll post a painting “inspiration” and then on Thursdays, I’ll post how I’m interpreting that inspiration.

Last week’s inspiration was FUR, and here is my interpretation.

Fur Girl 3

This week’s inspiration comes from the Creative Every Day Challenge. Every month, Leah posts an optional monthly theme for inspirational purposes and to give some focus to anyone who needs it. I’m going to use it every month. February’s theme is…LIGHT…so that’s what I’ll use for my inspiration this week.

Creating A Life Worth Living – Part 5

.

I’m reading Creating A Life Worth Living by Carol Lloyd. I picked this book because I’m trying to figure out the place I want painting to play in my life.

This week…Chapter 4, “The Kaleidoscope of Creativity,” examines ten distinct creative types, their employment challenges, special talents, and particular needs. I found this chapter very interesting.

Creating a Life Worth Living Book

The artistic profiles are:

Collaborative Creativity – Teacher, Realizer, Interpreter, Healer, Leader

Individual Creativity – Maker, Thinker, Generator, Inventor, Mystic

After reading through the artistic profiles, I am a Maker, Thinker and Mystic. It’s interesting to me that all my profiles fall under “Individual Creativity,” but that makes sense because I’ve never longed for or especially enjoyed collaboration.

Here are some of the hallmarks for each of my artistic profiles:

MakerFor most makers, their greatest joy springs from creating things with their hands. They value craftsmanship and material creation over abstract conceptualization.

ThinkerThinkers enjoy measuring, interpreting, analyzing, and theorizing. Their art is the art of allowing an observation to bear fruit in the mind. They feel at home in abstractions and take pleasure in seeing and inventing patterns in the world.

MysticMystics tend to be less product-oriented than many other artistic types. The ideas and objects that spring from their labors are side effects rather than the culmination of the creative process.

Here are the exercises I did for each of my artistic profiles. The exercises are intended to help you clarify your career path.

Maker ExerciseTry building the elements of your perfect working environment and look for clues within that.

Thinker ExerciseGo to a library and look through biographies of people you admire. Look at the course of their careers and how they found jobs that served their creative ambitions. Make a list of your favorite creative thinkers and their jobs. Now sit and write a list of the jobs you think will keep you in a constant state of curiosity and intellectual challenge.

Mystic ExerciseMake a list of the essences you want to bring into your life. Meditate on the perfect situation for your career and creative woes. At the end of the meditation, write down your ideas.

CLWL Part 5

Much of the work in this chapter helps you start the process of discovering work that supports your artistic profile(s)…whether it’s your ideal job or supportive work leading to your ideal job. I feel that I’m where I want to be with regards to my day job. I did these exercises with an eye towards how I want specific creative pursuits, particularly my painting and my writing, to expand and grow. I’m looking towards my “retirement” career. I think that changes how I approach a lot of these exercises because I don’t have a “dissatisfaction” with my current job/life. I’m grateful for that.

What this chapter reaffirmed for me:

Painting my girls, writing my blog and doing things the way I want to do them are the three things that are first and foremost in my mind and heart. They are the things I think of the most and that I want to pursue with the most focus. Here’s how this chapter helped me understand them better.

My Maker Profile

Painting my girls - It’s important for me to always be “making” something. I love creating my girl paintings. I can make them, and make them and make them, but they’re always different. I think that’s one reason I never enjoyed making crafts to sell. After I make one of something, I want to make something completely new.

Writing my blog – I love writing my blog…something new everyday.

Doing things my way – Both my girls and my blog allow me to always be creating something new and something that is totally me.

My Thinker Profile

Painting my girls – I can see my thinker profile coming into play with my Inspiration Mondays and Results Thursdays. I love to take an abstract idea and then translate it into a painting.

Writing my blog – I think (no pun intended) this is the reason I love my blog so much. It makes me think and plan and craft something.

Doing things my way – From the book…“Because thinkers feel so comfortable and connected to the ideas themselves, they don’t always see the point in spending so much time on the crafting of the form.”  and “Their creativity thrives in the half darkness of confusion, when the unsolved problem grows beautiful as it is turned over and over, the way a coarse rock is made smooth in a rock tumbler.” To me this says that I always have to leave plenty of room to mix things up and change my mind.

My Mystic Profile

Painting my girls – Currently, if I think of my “ideal” business plan, I would only paint and sell one-of-a-kind, original paintings. I think that impulse is strongly related to my mystic profile. I love the idea because if someone purchases a painting, it belongs totally to them, it’s special and it speaks to their heart.

Writing my blog – When I started writing my blog, my main objective was to put myself out there as a friendly, helpful, positive person because I wanted to connect with others and share myself and my journey. That’s still my main objective.

Doing things my way – Money has never been a motivator for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the cool, good things money can do, but I’ve never been motivated to take a job or a path because of money…there was always something else. I see that continuing in how I deal with my art. Generally, that means I don’t make the best business decisions, but I always try to make the best decisions for my heart.

I must say that this chapter brought me some peace, especially acknowledging how strongly I fit the mystic profile. So many times, I make decisions that don’t make sense in a “business” or “success” way of thinking, and now I have a little insight into why.

Share the Love Badge

Ann from Pawsitively Pets is hosting a fundraiser.

From now until February 11th, 2013, you can donate $1 (US Dollar) towards the Share the Love fundraiser. In return, she will make you a Valentine’s Day graphic/card with your pet on it. So not only will you be donating for a good cause, you also get something in return!

Wondering which charity will receive the funds when it’s all done? That’s the even better part! After the fundraiser is over, Ann will add the names of everyone who purchased a Valentine’s Day graphic into random.org and choose a random name. That person will select their favorite pet rescue or charity and all of the proceeds will be sent off to them!

If you would like a Valentine’s Day graphic and a chance to win a donation for your favorite pet rescue, you can donate your dollar at the Chip-In HERE. Please leave a comment on Ann’s Share the Love post HERE, telling her that you’ve donated and which pet you want to be included on your graphic. Also, leave the name of the charity you want the funds to go to should you win.

If you want a certain picture to be included on the graphic, you can email Ann at annstaub at yahoo dot com. Any super special instructions can be emailed as well. Otherwise, she’ll find an image on your blog or facebook page. But, you don’t have to have a blog or facebook page to participate, just email Ann a photo.

Freedom,  Casper, Nikki & Twinkie are all getting Valentine graphics and if we win, the funds will go to Allies for Greyhounds of West Michigan.

What a great idea!

Poetry & Kindness 4.0

.

Every Friday, I share a poem. Friday is also the day I post a prompt of something you can do to make the world a kinder place. I call this the Kind is Kool challenge.

I offer both the poem and the kindness challenge without any obligation, so “Comments” are turned off every Friday. Enjoy.

Poetry 4

Life

A crust of bread and a corner to sleep in,
A minute to smile and an hour to weep in,
A pint of joy to a peck of trouble,
And never a laugh but the moans come double;
And that is life!

A crust and a corner that love makes precious,
With a smile to warm and the tears to refresh us;
And joy seems sweeter when cares come after,
And a moan is the finest of foils for laughter;
And that is life!

Inspiration Results – January 31

.

Every Monday, I’m posting a painting “inspiration.” Every Thursday, I’m posting how I interpreted that inspiration. I decided to do this to keep myself painting, to strengthen how I go from an idea to a painting, and to give myself permission to play and try new things.

This week’s inspiration was FUR. That put me in mind of a painting I started in November.

AEDM 2012 Day 12

I decided to make her hat, scarf and muff furry.

Fur Girl

I’m going to let her “rest” for a few days, then consider if I want to do anything else to her.

Fur Girl 2

She’s close to done.

How to be HAPPY!

HTBHappyBadge

Every Thursday, I’m also participating in How to be HAPPY! a challenge hosted by Jay of The Depp Effect. This is a great challenge because it really makes you consider the things that make life good, and often those things are small but powerful. Here’s something that makes me happy…MY SLOW COOKER.

Slow Cooker

I remember I “earned” my first slow cooker from a Tupperware party I hosted as a young woman. This is my current slow cooker. I’ve had it for 8 or 9 years. I love the food that comes out of a slow cooker and how easy they are to use. I think about replacing my current slow cooker whenever I see a particularly pretty new one, but my old Somersize slow cooker does the job, so it stays and keeps making me happy.

TCM Classic Cruise 2013

.

On Monday, I hinted that I just returned from a cruise, but it wasn’t just any cruise, it was the TCM Classic Cruise!

TCM Cruise 2013 Banner

TCM stands for Turner Classic Movies and was the focus of a “Love This” post in 2012. This was my husband’s and my first cruise.

TCM Cruise 2013 Miami

We flew to Miami on Sunday. When we booked the cruise, we didn’t know what the weather was going to be like in January, so we wanted to get there the day before boarding. It was nice because we had time to relax and not be hurried.

TCM Cruise 2013 Setting Off From Miami

Monday, we boarded the ship and set sail. Bye-bye, Miami.

TCM Cruise 2013 Stairway

We sailed on the Celebrity Constellation. It was a beautiful ship.

TCM Cruise 2013 Celebrity Theatre

Being the TCM Classic Cruise, the activities centered around movies.

TCM Cruise 2013 Ben Mankiewicz

On board…Robert Osborne, Ben Mankiewicz, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Arlene Dahl, Sally Anne Howe, Norman Lloyd, Alex Trebek, Rich Little and Casey LaLonde (Joan Crawford’s grandson).

TCM Cruise 2013 Cayman Islands Welcome

Tuesday, was a day at sea. Wednesday, we stopped at Grand Cayman.

TCM Cruise 2013 Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is a tender port, which means that the ship anchors offshore and you disembark to a smaller boat (a tender) that takes you to the island.

TCM Cruise 2013 Catamaran

The shore excursion we chose was the “Catamaran Sail & Stingray City.” We set sail onboard the 60-foot “Cockatoo” and headed to Stingray City.

TCM Cruise 2013 Sting Ray Swimming

At Stingray City, we had the chance to get off the catamaran and touch and feed the southern Atlantic stingrays. It was very cool.

TCM Cruise 2013 Cozumel Dock

On Thursday, we docked in Cozumel. The shore excursion we chose in Cozumel was “San Gervasio Ruins and Beach Break.”

TCM Cruise 2013 San Gervasio Arch

We got to explore the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, enjoy a scenic ride around the island and spend a little time at a beach club.

TCM Cruise 2013 Cozumel's Best Tour Guide Alex

We had the best guide ever…Alex. He was wonderful.

TCM Cruise 2013 Between Ships Cozumel

All too soon, it was time to board the ship.

TCM Cruise 2013 Miami Congress Hotel

Friday was a day at sea, and we arrived back in Miami on Saturday morning. Our flight wasn’t until Saturday evening, so we used the day to tour Miami. I was excited about that because I’d always wanted to see the Art Deco District of South Beach.

The cruise was WONDERFUL, and I hope I get to cruise again in the future.

Want more? Check in on Thursday, February 14th and I’ll let you in on the adventures (the ones I know about) of two special guests we took along with us.

TCM Cruise 2013 Pip & Puddles Teaser

That’s right…Pip & Puddles joined us as part of Pip and Puddles’ BUCKET World Tour, and “yes” alcohol was involved.

BarkBox & doogyLoot

..

Demanding Hound

“We are spoiled and overindulged hounds. Now use that computer and order us something.”

Ahhh…the things I do for the pups.

BarkBox Box

BarkBox is a monthly service where every month you receive a box in the mail with four or more carefully selected products and presents for your dog – anything from bones and treats to shampoos, leashes and innovative new gadgets. And don’t worry…they come in 3 sizes, so you get the right products for your particular pup.

BarkBox Inside

We thought we’d give it a try. Our first box arrived in December.

BarkBox Fun

Look how fun! It even has festive crinkle paper. A party in a box!

What's Inside BarkBox

Each box comes with a card describing the products in that month’s BarkBox. In December we received…

Bocce's Bakery

Treats from Bocce’s Bakery.

Oatmeal Shampoo

Fresh Dog Oatmeal Shampoo. Freedom, Casper & Nikki were horrified that this came in a “treat” box.

Simply Fido Reindeer

Simply Fido Organic Pet Toy…a cute reindeer.

PuppyCake

Puppy Cake . I must admit that Red Velvet has me a little concerned. We’re saving this for spring so the pups can eat it outdoors.

Another nice thing…A portion of proceeds from each box goes to help doggies-in-need. If you use this link to start your BarkBox service (https://barkbox.com/r/auAa1kDbui/), Freedom, Casper & Nikki get a free BarkBox and you’ll get $5 off your first subscription.

doggyLoot Logo

My friend, Amy, let me know about this cool site…doggyLoot. doggyLoot offers products at up to 75% off regular prices and delivers them straight to your door. My favorite part…all shipping is completely free. Last time we were with the Cross hounds (our friends), they received a package from doggyLoot. It was the Kygen Ginormous Invincible Snake. Nikki snagged it and wouldn’t let it go, so I ordered her one. It is her favorite toy. Since her favorite thing to do with Mr. Snake is squeak him, he’s not our favorite toy.

If you use this link (https://doggyloot.com/invite/29cbbc57) to place your first order, Freedom, Casper & Nikki get a $10 credit and you get $5 off.

Special Note…We’re not telling you about BarkBox or doggyLoot so we can get free stuff, but the programs are there so we figured, why not mention it.

My Snake

“I love Mr. Snake.”

Creating A Life Worth Living – Part 4

.

I’m reading Creating A Life Worth Living by Carol Lloyd. I picked this book because I’m trying to figure out the place I want painting to play in my life.

This week…Chapter 3, “Excavating the Future,” leads you through an exploration of yourself by examining memories that involve beauty, strength, and inspiration.

Creating a Life Worth Living Book

I must say that I didn’t spend a lot of time on the exercises, not because I didn’t think they were important, but rather because I’ve done exercises like this before, so I feel I know myself in this regard. I will say that reviewing the things you loved to do as a child, teen and young adult can be very revealing in regards to your talents and passions.

CLWL Part 4

Here’s what I know about myself…

I am most productive in a structured schedule. I need a day job.

I create best in private, and I need a lot of time. I process and work slowly.

The career I’m looking for now is different than a career I might have been looking for when I was in my 20’s. I’m in a position to do more things on my terms (thank you, husband and day job).

I’m comfortable with myself so, in some regards, it’s easier for me to overcome fear and disregard nay-sayers.

I have to continually be learning, growing and changing.
